When an egg is fertilized by a sperm, the full set of 23 pairs of chromosomes is made. One chromosome from each pair comes from each parent. Every sperm and egg has a different combination of genes, and it's down to chance which sperm happens to fertilize which egg. You can see how sexual reproduction leads to lots of variation.
