What's it about?
Facts of Life describes the changes of puberty in a frank, factual and accessible style, set within the wider context of human growth and development. Whilst focusing on the science, the site attempts to provide a balanced treatment that considers emotional as well as biological development. Interactive graphics, animations, exam tips and quizzes are included to engage and sustain interest and to check progress and understanding.

Who's it for?
This website is designed for use in school and for reference at home or in the library. It particularly supports the Science curriculum and the Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) framework.

The content is tailored to the requirements of the National Curriculum for England and Wales, although it is also appropriate for the Science Curriculum in Scotland (10-14 age group within the 5-14 Development Programme). The main age group for which it is intended is 11-14 (KS3 / S1 and S2). Some content, particularly in the section on variation, is also suitable for 15-16 year old (KS4 / S3 and S4 Standard Grade) students. In the interests of providing coherent coverage, some material is included that goes beyond the explicit requirements of the National Curriculum.

How do I use it?

You are most likely to find parts of the site useful within Science or PSHE lessons. The section titles are intended to be self-explanatory, so for example Cells could form part of a Y7 biology topic and Puberty could fit in well with your PSHE programme. It depends very much on how your particular school divides responsibility for these areas between Science and the pastoral system.

You are strongly encouraged to preview the material before use to confirm its suitability for what you have in mind. Each section includes copyright-free printable activities, which you can photocopy for use within your establishment.

Many KS4 students will find the site useful for consolidation and revision, particularly in preparation for Science Double Award or Biology GCSE.

An important note about practical work:

You are respectfully reminded that it is the teacher's responsibility to conduct a risk assessment before undertaking practical work with students. These are standard, low-risk activities, but any work with laboratory apparatus and chemicals must be supervised by a suitably trained and qualified teacher.

Which aspects of the curriculum are covered?
This website supports substantial areas of the
Science Curriculum and the non-statutory framework for PSHE. See the Teacher's notes for details.

Using the site also supports the statutory requirement that 'pupils should be given opportunities to apply and develop their ICT capability through the use of ICT tools to support their learning in all subjects'.
